Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Maimouna LY. I design children designer clothes and accessories for toddlers and babies. I am French from Mauritanian origin, passionate about art and fashion. I am a mother of 2 daughters.
How did you start with children designer clothes and accessories?
I felt the need to pass my cultural richness through my daughters’ outfits so I started to make their outfits. My career in fashion design allowed me to acquire the necessary knowledge. I later started gifting my work to family and friends. I saw a great interest in my creations, I decided to launch my own brand, Neeyodï was born.
How Do You Define Neyoodï in One Sentence?
It is a brand of children designer clothes and accessories that suit both ethnic-curious and chic for babies and children.
What makes your creations different?
My ethnic inspiration. My creations are made exclusively from Wax. This is an ethnic fabric in shimmering colors and geometric motifs. My designs are 100% cotton. The printing technique is quite unique as well to keep the wax bright. The cloth does not fade and colors have a great fit that allows for a true work of art. I create original pieces, hand-made and made in France: the sketch to manufacturing is all done in my workshop. Each piece is customizable (choice and tissues association) so that each customer can have the design and product that resembles them.
Does western culture influence your design?
The heart of my brand is the association of West African and Western trend. I use a combination of these two universes in all my creations. I use the wax and associates it with the Western united fabrics reflecting the mixing of cultures. The grounds of the printed wax constantly evolving, so my creations will evolve with the trends of ready to wear Western and those of the printed wax. Traditional materials and modern cuts unite to become one.
What are the steps to make and design a piece of Neyoodï?
Step 1 : Sketching a dress style
Step 2 : Sizing adjustments
Step 3 : Choice of different fabrics and materials
Step 4 : Cutting the pattern pieces in the fabric
Step 5 : assembly of parts to the machine
